Title: Black? White! Day? Night
Author: Laura Vaccaro Seeger
I just have to mention this one because I used it for an Opposites storytime a few weeks ago and one little boy exclaimed, "This book is MAGIC!!" What better recommendation can you get? ![]()
Seeger is the author of another of my faves, Lemons are not Red. She uses die-cut flaps to reveal opposites in clever ways. The tiny bug we see in the cutout turns out to be the eye of a huge elephant when we lift the flap. Blue diamonds that are all alike turn out to be part of snowflakes that are very different. The concepts are simple (with a few trickier ones like ordinary/extraordinary thrown in) and I love the bold colours. Kids have great fun anticipating the answers and it's a fun way to teach opposites. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that it's a tad too long for comfortable reading aloud - leaving out a couple of the concepts would've made it just perfect for me.
