Alternating boy-girl chapters, written by a male and a female author, seem to be a trend these days. I like 'em, it's like two for the price of one! In this one, Norah is written by Rachel Cohn, one of my fave YA authors and Nick is fleshed out by David Levithan - I confess I haven't read any of his books yet, but if Nick is anything to go by, I should Levithan to my to-read list. The two N's meet on a night out in Manhattan when both are suffering the effects of being dumped. When Nick's ex-girlfriend Tris approaches him at the bar, he turns and asks Norah (a stranger) if she'll be his girlfriend for five minutes. Norah replies by kissing him and their night gets crazier from there. The whole book takes place over the course of the one evening and a lot happens in just a few hours.
I really liked this one, especially since you get both Nick and Norah's points of view. I liked getting both sides of the love story, unlike typical romance novels where you only get one side, usually the woman's, and the love object is often pretty vaguely described. In that same vein, you also get to know Nick and Norah equally and they're wonderful characters - witty and smart but also wrapped up in their own issues. And I must say that Nick is a total sweetheart - I'd have been smitten with him, too. Nick's in a band and Norah's dad is a music producer, so there are lots of references to music (hence the Infinite Playlist). I'm not cool enough to know a lot of them, so for folks with a serious music background, this book would be even more enjoyable. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist provides a night full of music, romance, misunderstandings, and humour.
