First story of the new year

posted Thursday, 4 January 2007

I've been refgrunting for my first 2 evening shifts of the year, but rather than post it all at once, I figured I'd start off with just one gem from Tuesday night.

A quiet, mumbly, kinda greasy guy comes up and asks to speak to the System Administrator. I tell him no, we don't really have one, what's the problem? (Thinking it's an Internet error message.) He says he's some kind of computer guy/student (I can't really hear him) and our system is something (presumably not good). Well, the IT department actually takes care of the whole city, so we don't need anyone. He mumbles some more about it being good for his credibility and then asks for the manager. I tell him I'm the acting manager and that I can give him the number for City Hall to call, but that it's not really appropriate, as again, they manage the entire City. He says that's okay and mumbles again about it being good for his reputation as a security expert (and what a reputation it is, I'm sure). So I write out the general enquiries number for City Hall. Good luck, weirdo.
